FLASKAS – Feeling The Rhythm (Single Review)

Sunshine Coast band FLASKAS announce their arrival with the release of Feeling The Rhythm – the first single from their forthcoming debut album, Kingdom Come (due out in August 2018).

Since their formation in 2016, FLASKAS have really come a long way. Over the course of their relatively short career thus far, they’ve enjoyed support spots alongside the likes of Busby Marou, Timberwolf and Boy & Bear (to name but a few) and appearances at festivals such as Airlie Beach Music Festival, Caloundra Music Festival and Sea N Sound Festival.

But, if you’re like me and haven’t heard of FLASKAS before, their music can be difficult to describe. That may be why they came up with their own term for it – “Earth Rock”. It’s a fusion of coastal roots, funk, blues, folk and Indigenous instrumentation to create something that is altogether unique. If their PR release is to be believed, the group shares “a multi-dimensional and cultural experience that will touch and invigorate your soul.”

Admittedly, I wouldn’t go quite that far, but there is something captivating about musicality of Feeling The Rhythm. It premiered via Roots N All on Triple J just a few weeks ago, and it’s easy to imagine it sitting comfortably alongside The Cat Empire or old school Jason Mraz (who, incidentally, is rumoured to be working on another album).

While the song is appealing from the get-go, it was with the introduction of the guitar feature that the song really came into its own for me. There’s that cool, laid-back vibe that lends itself to relaxation and enjoying yourself at the beach on a hot summer’s day, but with a slight sense of sophistication that comes from really knowing what it takes to make a great sound.

If Feeling The Rhythm is any indication of what we can expect from FLASKAS’ debut record, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for new material.
